Coping with Depression

Depression is the second leading cause of disability worldwide. It is a debilitating disease and a major contribution to the % of suicides. Depression can progressively build up in a person and it can go unnoticed until that person hits crisis point.

Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness with its symptoms having the following effect on people, a loss of enjoyment in activities and social interactions, a lack of energy and tiredness, difficulty in concentrating or decision making, a loss of interest in food or eating too much resulting in weight gain or loss, low mood or having a bleak and negative view of the future.

On average, an episode of depression can last for up to 6-8 months.  This can extend for up to a year or longer and it can happen to anyone, having a lasting affect on our physical and emotional behaviour.

When we are suffering from depression we feel an overwhelming feeling of despair, that there is no hope, feeling worthless, no one to help/turn to or listen and no one who understands, leaving us seeing no light at the end of the tunnel, alone and unable to break through.
