Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be hypnotised to do silly things against my will?

  • The answer is No! When we are in hypnosis (trance) we are still in control and we process and decide whether information or suggestions are useful to us or not. Your subconscious mind will simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you. The Hypnotherapist is merely a guide, he or she cannot make you do anything against your will.

Is it possible to get stuck in trance?

  • No one has ever been stuck in a hypnotic trance, hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we can exit. The hypnotherapist will always make sure that you are back in a full state of awareness at the end of each session.

What is hypnosis like?

  • Hypnosis is a very natural relaxing state, an individual experience, that is designed to reduce anxiety and calm the mind.  It can make you feel very relaxed and people are often surprised when they hear that it can resemble sleep from a physical point of view, where your body is relaxed and comfortable.  You may feel a sense of weightlessness, a feeling of being slightly heavy, or even tingly, with decreased activity, as your muscles relax, whilst your mind is keenly alert.

How many sessions will I need?

  • The number of sessions will vary as each person is different, working towards their own individual goal. The beauty of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is that it can show results in a short period of time. The number of sessions & therapy plan that an individual may need will be discussed at your initial consultation appointment.

Do I have to be face to face at your practice to have sessions?

  • No! the beauty of this type of therapy is that you don’t have to leave your home if you do not wish. Sessions can be conducted online over Zoom, FaceTime, Teams, Google and work just as well, online, as face to face.

Is a person in hypnosis asleep or unconscious?

  • Whilst the hypnotic state might resemble sleep from a physical point of view, slowed breathing, eyes closed, muscles relaxed and activity decreased, from the mental standpoint you are generally relaxed and may be keenly alert, in a comfortable state where you can think, talk, and even move if needed. Everybody is unique and experiences hypnosis in their own way.

Will it work for me because I don’t think I can be hypnotised?

  • The truth is everyone can be hypnotised and we all go into such states of mind naturally in our daily life, for example when we ‘Daydream’, or concentrate deeply on something. If you think about ‘Daydreams’, we are acutely focused but the mind cuts out the sound and things around us and not within the Daydream, we experience changes in our conscious awareness. We all experience some form of trance like hypnotic state, each time we engage our imagination in something, such as reading a book, driving a familiar route or watching a film, we are in a state of hypnosis.

How long are the sessions?

  • Sessions normally last 1 hour.

Is hypnotherapy a magic wand?

  • No, Clients often comment on how hypnotherapy has helped them, but it is important to understand that change happens because you want it too. All therapy is a co-operative interaction between the therapist and client and that the client is prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.  Providing you are willing to make changes to the way that you think, solution focused hypnotherapy can work quickly and be highly effective in relieving many people’s life challenges.
